Well I live in Japan and you don't see much of them. You have to go to a pretty bad place to see girls with tattoos. I did see a Lambo and a Merc limo under a bridge with some guys talking one time, when I was on the train in Yokohama. Maybe only three of those pictures is anything like a Yakuza tattoo. If they screw up they have to cut a finger off, I did see a guy with his little finger missing. These are the guys you are looking for:

I find the work beautiful, and the dedication impressive, but my understanding is that this type of tattoo is not acceptable in "polite" company in Japan, for lack of a better word. The associations with criminality are deeply rooted and you'd best not let anyone see your tattoos in most situations. Is this correct?

True, its a big taboo. I have some tattoos that are not Japanese, I am not Asian so I am clearly not Yakuza and we went to join a health club in Tokyo years ago. Everything was fine until we used the pool, then they said I was ok everywhere except the pool etc.. So we didn't join. I think with younger people its becoming more acceptable but for sure in most situations it is not really ok.
